Why we love it
Long Nordic season, flat light you learn to love, and the best après north of the Alps. Easy runs for everyone, plus enough off-piste on Åreskutan to keep you busy.
Getting there
Åre Östersund Airport is the closest, about 100 km and just over an hour by road, with regular flights from Stockholm. Trondheim Airport in Norway is around two hours away. By train, SJ runs day and night trains from Stockholm straight to Åre station in the middle of the village.
Who it's for
Åre suits beginners, intermediates and families best. Björnen is a dedicated family area with gentle runs, and the long cruisers from the top of Åreskutan are perfect for building confidence. Advanced skiers can find steeper pistes, the 2019 World Championship runs and some good off-piste in the bowls around the summit.
Best time to go
February to April is the sweet spot, with plenty of snow and long, bright days. December and January can be very cold with only a few hours of daylight, though floodlit pistes help. The season often runs into early May, and spring skiing in Åre is a big local tradition.
