Why we love it

Linked with Tignes up to the Grande Motte glacier. Long season, endless freeride lines and La Folie Douce for dancing in ski boots.

Getting there

Chambéry is the closest airport, about 2 to 2.5 hours by road. Geneva and Lyon are both around three hours away. By train, take the TGV to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and then a bus or taxi for the last 30 km up to the resort.

Who it's for

Val d'Isère is made for confident intermediates, experts and freeriders. The Face de Bellevarde Olympic downhill, the steep runs off Solaise and the endless off-piste across the area are the big draws. Beginners have free learning areas in the village and a gentle plateau at the top of Solaise.

Best time to go

The resort is high and snowsure, with skiing from late November into early May. January to March has the best powder, and the Grande Motte glacier above Tignes keeps the high runs good late in the season. Early December brings the Critérium de la Première Neige World Cup races.
